S.O.A.P. Journaling
Ever wonder how to get more out of reading the Bible?
S.O.A.P. journaling is a great way to get started!
What is S.O.A.P.?
S.O.A.P. stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It is a method of journaling that is designed to help us process God's will for our lives. All you need is something to write on and access to a Bible (either physical or on your device!).
Scripture
Choose a chapter or section of the Bible to read. This can be a part of a reading plan that studies a particular subject or you can start reading a whole book in the Bible (the book of Mark is a great place to start!). Make sure to read it slowly, taking time to reflect on what is being said.
Observation
Reflect on what you just read and observe what you think the author is trying to say about God, Humanity, or the relationship between them. It helps to write down the verses that stand out to you and to make comments on them.
Application
Ask yourself "How does what I learned about God or Humanity affect my life?" and write down what you believe the answer is. It is best to seek God in community so if you need someone to be accountable to or to help you understand how to apply your new understanding, please reach out to your small group leader or one of our staff members!
Prayer
Now it is time to personally ask God to give you the strength to carry out His will for your life and to live in a way that reveals God's character to everyone in your life. Prayer is so important and is at the core of a Christian's relationship with God.
Below is an example of what S.O.A.P. journaling can look like. Check it out!
Example - Acts 2:1-47
Scripture
Acts 2:42-44
"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common."
Observation
God designed for us to pursue Jesus individually as well as in community. While we may get discouraged or disillusioned, our Christian family helps understand and builds us up in truth and love.
Application
Engaging in my Christian community is vital to my spiritual health. I will seek out opportunities to promote unity in my community. Providing for people in need in my daily life reveals God's character and I will ask God to highlight people in need to me.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for seeking and desiring a relationship with me. Help me to see opportunities to promote unity among my community. Help me to see those in need in my everyday life and to act when it is in my power to do so. Amen.
